The origin of the caduceus

This sizeable fragment of pottery from the Ubaid period of early Sumerian civilisation depicts what is thought to be a precursor to the well-known caduceus symbol. The central staff is absent, but the pair of serpents ambiguously intertwine and flow into what appear to be wings.

The French title for me reflects the spiritual uplift of the image, the floating pause of a wind-blown seed-head finding momentary lull in the clean summer breeze, "And beyond it, the deep blue air, that shows / Nothing, and is nowhere, and is endless."
